When John Deere agreed to open up its repair software to independent mechanics, it was clear this would never be just about farmers.
Though tractors and the like are certainly a major talking point, right-to-repair arguments have long extended beyond agricultural equipment to include consumer tech, mobility aids like wheelchairs and everyday cars.
Decisions about who can access software — diagnostic tools, firmware and repair systems — can shape who participates in the local economy, the Deere settlement shows. Dependence on locked-down systems can have economic consequences for communities where those products are used
When you're the one building a piece of equipment, on the other hand, a locked-down system might make a lot of sense.
There are considerations about safety, cybersecurity, intellectual property and product functionality. Keeping software private lets a company more confidently guarantee safety, protect its own inventions and ensure unapproved fixes don't ruin a machine. It’s a practical matter of quality control.
Plus, requiring customers to use company-approved repair shops guarantees a steady stream of income after the initial sale — and revenue is the lifeblood of any business.
Whether that's justified is at the heart of the right-to-repair debate (alongside the potential effects of enshittification, planned obsolescence and e-waste).
Research by economist Leo Kahane analyzed the real-world impact of Massachusetts’ 2012 automotive right-to-repair law, finding that forcing manufacturers to share diagnostic data directly boosted both the number and overall market share of small, independent repair shops.
Companies hiding their instruction manuals or troubleshooting software could also be making it harder for people to learn how modern machinery works.
When repair workflows are transparent, programs can actively train a new generation in software troubleshooting and digital diagnostics, as the Northwest Auto Care Alliance points out. If local mechanics can only handle basic physical adjustments, the community may lose chances to upskill.
As a result, the technical choices made by manufacturers today may quietly determine who has the tools to maintain those technologies tomorrow.
